Crusaid FOCUS, Points of Light:
Crusaid’s first Point of Light was established three years ago, in an extremely resource-poor informal settlement near Johannesburg, to bring basic support and structure back into the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children living with or affected by HIV and AIDS.
The Benoni Point of Light has been a beacon to hundreds of children who attend the centre after school to do their homework, play and receive a hot meal. The volunteer staff (who are selected from within their own community) act as guardians, ensuring the youngsters have help around the home in the absence of one or both parents. The centre itself is a basic, but sound structure, which includes a kitchen for cooking facilities and a covered outdoor area for eating and meetings.
As a result of the positive impact reported by those involved, Crusaid is expanding the Points of Light programme, tailoring it to any vulnerable group in any given resource-poor community that experiences HIV-related hardship.
In addition to the Benoni project, Crusaid currently funds two others in the Western Cape Province and plans are well underway to launch two more, elsewhere in southern Africa, shortly.
