Facts, news & links - HIV in the UK

Clearly Crusaid’s role is as important now as at our launch in 1986. But much has changed too, and it is imperative that Crusaid responds to the changing nature of the HIV and AIDS pandemic.

In 1986, for example, infections were confined almost exclusively to the gay community. Now, over half of all people in the UK who acquire HIV do so as a result of heterosexual sex. And, contrary to popular belief, the UK HIV epidemic continues to grow.

In 2006:
- Over 7,000 people were diagnosed with HIV in the UK

There are currently over 73,000 people living with HIV in the UK.

In developed countries such as the UK, HIV infection is now a treatable, but not curable disease. Death rates have fallen by 2/3 since before the advent of combination antiretroviral therapy in the late 1990s, but still every day someone dies of AIDS in the UK. Treatments are difficult to take and often cause severe side-effects. Funds available from government for social care and support have been cut to pay for expensive drugs. Education and prevention efforts have waned and young people are increasingly at risk.

Crusaid's role is to fill the gap between public funding and private need, supporting individuals through The Crusaid Hardship Fund, sponsoring projects to prevent the spread of HIV and to care for people affected throughout the UK and abroad, and driving forward the search for better treatment protocols.

A small monthly amount from you will make a huge difference to people in need. If you would like to ensure we can continue to meet the need, please consider making a donation or committing a regular gift to Crusaid today.
