What we do - African Projects

Crusaid's largest international project to date has been the Hannan Crusaid Treatment Centre in Guguletu, South Africa. This practice model has proved so successful, in August 2005 our pilot came to an end and the Western Cape Government took over the running and funding of the centre.

We are also delighted that the treatment protocol developed by the clinic is now part of the Western Cape’s response to the South African Government’s plan to fight HIV and AIDS. The protocol will be replicated in every new clinic set up by the Government!

A NEW GENERATION OF PEER EDUCATORS.

Students at the St Thomas Primary School in Rehoboth, Karas, in southern Namibia, are benefiting from a pioneering project to educate children about HIV and AIDS and how to stay safe.

A new generation of peer educators is being created, with a ripple effect that is spreading across the regionKiosks have been set up in the school, each supported by an educator, where students can ask questions and learn about HIV and AIDS.

The kiosks help children separate myths from reality and learn what they must do to stay safe – vital knowledge in a region where one in four adults is HIV positive.

The project, run by the Southern Youth Development Organisation (SYDO) with a Crusaid grant, has so far set up 26 kiosks in different schools and reached over 600 students living in poor communities.

The impact has been enormous. Not only are students learning how
to stay safe themselves. They have discovered a new hope for the future and want to take the message to other communities too.

‘A new generation of peer educators is being created, with a ripple effect that is spreading across the region,’ says project director, Marius !Kharigub.

So far the project operates in 19 towns. Thanks to Crusaid’s support, SYDO is now in a much stronger position to ensure its long-term future and extend the kiosks to more areas.

Children aged 8-14 interact with comic-book characters through a series of animated storiesThe African Pulse, South Africa
A new and innovative CD ROM and website is helping children in South Africa learn about HIV and AIDS.

By law all children in South Africa receive 20 hours of HIV and AIDS education each year. But teachers sometimes struggle to find good quality teaching resources to help them.

The African Pulse therefore meets a vital need.

Children aged 8-14 interact with comic-book characters through a series of animated stories – learning about HIV prevalence, the impact of HIV on society and how to make safe choices.

Following a successful pilot in 80 schools, a Crusaid grant is funding the final development and distribution of the resource to 3,000 schools. An estimated 270,000 children will benefit.

The government in the Western Cape has also now agreed to make the African Pulse’s CD ROMs available to all schools in the region.

In a country where one in four 10-12 year olds are sexually active, educating children is crucial in the fight against the HIV and AIDS pandemic.
