Research funded by Crusaid is improving the treatment and care for people living with HIV and AIDS. Crusaid helps to break new ground in the care and support of people with HIV and AIDS by funding and evaluating innovative projects. Lessons learned from innovation are then applied to help improve services across the UK.
Crusaid is proud to have been the first charitable organisation to commit major funding for the Oxford-Nairobi vaccine effort. The funding enabled the Oxford-Nairobi Vaccine Effort to expand, later renaming themselves the "International AIDS Vaccine Initiative" (IAVI). IAVI work to provide better treatments for people living with HIV, search for a vaccine, and ultimately, a cure.
The Crusaid Research Institute opened at The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in April 2002. It is dedicated to the development of better treatments for people with HIV, and to finding a vaccine and eventually a cure. People with HIV are gradually becoming resistant to current drug treatments, so the Institute is helping to develop new, more effective drugs to combat the virus.
In 2004, Crusaid made a grant to pilot "Know for Sure", a rapid testing service open outside office hours. Following the £30,000 grant from Crusaid the government is now funding several more rapid testing clinics elsewhere in the UK.
